A new film by Laurent Montaron

May 25 – June 24, 2006
Opening: Thursday, May 25, 2006

LMAKprojects is proud to present Rounded with a sleep, Laurent Montaron’s latest film. In this film he examines youth culture and youth’s fascination with altered states of consciousness.
Inspired by Shakespeare’s sentence:

“We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep… “

1 William Shakespeare, The Tempest, iv,

Montaron created a poetic film. Rounded with a sleep portrays a group of adolescents wandering silently through a deserted patch of land somewhere in the countryside. The walk is part of their ritual, which allows them to sink into a different state of mind. The youngsters will forcefully make each other lose their consciousness, they fall into a trance, a self-inflicted blackout, that makes them experience dizziness, hallucinations and complete loss of perception.

Laurent Montaron (1972) lives and works in Paris. His work has been shown throughout the United States and Europe. Recently, he has exhibited work at ARC Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, La Galerie in Noisy-le-Sec, Apex Art, New York and Schleicher + Lange in Paris; this year he will show his work at the CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art in Bordeaux and at the contemporary art centre Abbaye Saint-André in Meymac both in France. His works are included in public collections such as FRAC Champagne-Ardenne and FRAC Aquitaine and Fonds National d’Art Contemporain.
