LMAKbooks+design is pleased to present a glimpse into the life of Yvonne Durant who built herself up and pushed through the barriers of countless ‘-isms’. We are excited about her reading from her memoir, A Few Good Miles, A Brooklyn Girl’s Story this Wednesday, September 27, accompanied by eight drawings by Miles Davis. For a period, he was a strong presence in her life and she was his muse.
From the memoir –
Our whites used to come out so white, the laundry’s owner gave us compliments. My mother, June, would join us for folding and take great pleasure in talking about the dinginess of other people’s wash. “They call those clean clothes?”
The first time Yvonne realized that she had writing skills, she’d won an essay contest in fifth grade. As a result of her writing talents, she was also the official writer of the funeral programs for her family members who went on to glory. It was most stressful because everyone wanted a mention. She’s worked as a copywriter in major agencies, including a multinational in Milan, Italy. In addition to ad copy, Yvonne has written numerous articles and essays for magazines and newspapers. Along with the memoir, she’s also written a novel. She is represented by Faith Childs Literary Agency.
